Three Firemen Win by Whisker in Protection's 150th Anniversary Beard Contest (1979)

Flashback

Fishkill - Allan Way, Albert Carr and Thomas Pearson were the big winners in the Protection Engine Fire Company's "beard contest", which came to a conclusion Wednesday night at the company bazaar in Barker's Shopping Plaza on Route 52.

The event is one of many being held in connection with the 150th anniversary celebration of the fire company.

Way, first assistant chief of the company, was judged to have the "best moustache." Carr won the trophy for having the "best looking beard," while Pearson earned the award for having the "worst beard."

Actually, Pearson's beard was good looking and master of ceremonies Rich Williams apologized for the selection.

The judges, Jim Pietragallo and Phil Defayette, both of the Village Barber Shop, had little difficulty in selecting the best looking moustache and beard, but they seemed to have a hard time picking out one that might deserve the title of "worst beard."

According to the contest rules, the winners had to have their beards and moustaches shaved immediately after the contest. Pietragallo and Defayette did the honors the modern way - with electric razors - much to the delight of the large audience.

Assemblyman Glenn Warren, R-C, Fishkill and Dutchess County Sheriff Fred Scoralick were on hand for the contest and bazaar.

Warren presented fire company officials Peter Philips, president and Rad Wilson, chief, with a proclamation from the state Legislature honoring the company for it's 150 years of service.

The anniversary celebration will continue tonight with a Mardi-Gras parade which will start at 6:30 p.m. Paraders will start on Broad Street near Jackson Street and processd over Broad to Main Street, and south to the bazaar site. Trophies will be awarded at the bazaar grounds for several categories, including most comical fireman.

A highlight of the activities Friday will be a large display of fireworks at 10 p.m. near the bazaar grounds.

Saturday will be the final day of the celebration and wlll be highlighted by a large firematic parade, featuring 40 fire companies with bands. Streets leading into the village will be closed at 2 p.m. and the parade is scheduled to start at 3.
