Membership Information:

Protection Engine Company No. 1 Inc., functions under its own Constitution and By-Laws as a part of the Fishkill Fire Department. The Company was formed in accordance with New York State Law and operates under the laws of the State as well as local laws of the Village of Fishkill, and follows policies and standards as established by the United States Government. Its members are dedicated to the preservation of life and property. In doing so, the membership acts in a professional, efficient, and safe manner obtained through frequent formal training, drills and experience.

Protection Engine (or PECO, as we call the Company) provides manpower for fire, rescue and fire prevention activities to the Village of Fishkill Fire Department as well as Company sponsored activities.

Traditional firefighting, Emergency Medical Technician certification, Certified First Responder training and specialized training to become proficient in tasks including rescue, rapid intervention, hazardous material mitigation, disaster management, and incident command can be expected as you grow into the organization.

Minimum Requirements:

Active:

  • You must be 16 years of age with a parent’s written approval or 18 years of age without the written approval.
  • Be willing and able to take a comprehensive physical examination to determine your fitness for duty.
  • Be willing to provide information that will be used by the Fire Chief to obtain a background check on you for past arson convictions.
  • Be willing and able to participate in training exercises, fire response, social activities and other Company and/or Department functions as needed.

Associate Membership:

  • Living within the Village of Fishkill - You must be over 40 years of age or have a physical condition that would not allow you to serve as an active firefighter. Living outside the Village of Fishkill – You must be 18 years of age.
  • Be willing and able to participate in social activities, fund raising events and Company sponsored functions.

As a firefighter you have many levels of responsibilities. Most of these you already know as a private citizen. You must be honest, not have a record of crime, and be willing and able to learn. And you must be in good health and willing to help someone in their time of need.

As a member of PECO, you will be required to adhere to its Constitution and By-Laws, pay dues, attend a minimum number of company meetings and training sessions every year (drills and courses).

You will also be expected to participate in Company fund raising activities, parades and work details.

Those seeking a deep self satisfaction, a disciplined life, a sense of camaraderie, the fulfillment of helping a neighbor in need, showing a bit of courage or chutzpah will be well rewarded in this organization.

And too, there is the learning experience - the latest state of the art fire suppression, rescue and hazardous materials handling techniques, building and vehicle construction, and safety and self protection techniques. And not to be overlooked, there is the enjoyment to be obtained from the social activities sponsored by PECO. Although they vary from year to year, they have included softball games (both league and pick-up), banquets, trips, dinners, and golf tournaments.

And then there is one serious benefit; A retirement incentive for those meeting mandatory attendance requirements. Currently, the Retirement Program offers free life insurance and a retirement stipend of twenty dollars per month for each year you meet the active service requirements. Twenty years of active service could get you $400 per month when you reach 65 years of age.
